Train Travel in Vietnam
There are many classes of trains in Vietnam, but for long distances (e.g., 32 hours from Hanoi to Saigon) you'll want to secure an aircon sleeper.
We've found these to be comfortable, and the sheets clean.
Bathrooms are extremely rudimentary (most are squat toilets), and the rocking track makes you wish you had a third hand to prevent you from falling into a mess.
Rather than buying your ticket at the train station, we strongly recommend that your hotel or a nearby travel agency do it for you.
You'll save time, get it right, and the small commission will be worth it.
At your destination, remember that anyone offering to take your bags will expect a tip.
You may be met at the platform by someone offering to take you to a taxi.
This person, who is rarely the driver, will take you to a taxi that may already have the meter running, and expect a tip.
Leave the station, find your own taxi, ensure that the meter starts when you get in, and you'll have a happier experience.
